Here is Ron Gabel's answer to question number 744

Question:

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE YEAR MY SHOTGUN WAS MADE. THE ONLY THING ON THE GUN IS THE NAME (BAYSTATE), AND A NUMBER (A686686). IT IS A 20 GAUGE AND IT WAS MADE IN MASSACHUETTS. THE GUN IS AT LEAST 70 YEARS OLD, BUT I WOULD LIKE A YEAR IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

Answer:

The Bay State Arms Co. was started in Worchester Mass. in 1870 later moving to Uxbridge Mass. The company was apparently discontinued in 1874, but was reorganized in 1880 making the "Bay State Gun". The company was later purchased by Hopkins & Allen who continued to make "Bay State" single barrel guns. The years Hopkins & Allen produced these guns is unlisted, but I believe you can assume your gun was made in the early 1900's.
